What is Tilsit?
The name of a town in East Prussia, Germany. Also the name of cheese with a pungent aroma and a tangy taste. Originally invented by Dutch immigrants trying to recreate Gouda. Due to local bacteria, molds and yeast they ended up with a brand new cheese, similar to Havarti but much stronger. Often referred to as “Strong Havarti”.
