Cheesy Hash Brown Steak

Cheesy Hash Brown Steak is a great way of sneaking breakfast into your dinner or dinner into your breakfast. Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups frozen shredded hash brown potatoes, thawed
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt, divided
  • 200 grams 3 yr Cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1 (1.5-pound) beef top sirloin steak, 1-inch thick and cut into 4 portions
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 2 tablespoons fresh chives, minced

Preparation and Cooking:

  • Preheat the grill to medium heat.
  • In a large skillet, heat the butter over medium-high heat.
  • Add the onion and cook until tender, about 2-3 minutes.
  • Add the garlic and cook until golden, about 2 minutes.
  • Stir in the hashbrowns and 1/4 teaspoon salt, spreading both in an even layer in the skillet.
  • Reduce the heat to medium and cook for 5 minutes undisturbed.
  • Flip the hashbrowns and cook, covered, until heated through and the bottom is lightly browned, for about 5-6 minutes.
  • Sprinkle the Cheddar cheese over the top of the hash browns.
  • Cover the hashbrowns and keep warm, off of the heat.
  • Season the beef with the remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper.
  • Grill the beef until it reaches the desired level of doneness, reading 135 degrees F for medium-rare, 140 degrees F for medium, and 145 degrees F for medium-well when tested with a meat thermometer, about 5-7 minutes on each side.
  • Remove the steaks from the heat and top each portion with 1/4 of the hashbrowns.
  • Garnish with the chives and serve.
